"Life is not a matter of holding good cards, but sometimes, playing a poor hand well."
- Jack London
We feed lots of needy Polish children, but we are also in the business of helping our PromiseKids learn to “play a poor hand well.” Jack London (quote above) was right when he said that life is not always about holding good cards, but it is also about learning to play the bad cards well that we are dealt.
Our PromiseKids are accustomed to playing poor hands on a daily basis. Their home circumstances are bleak at best, and they face each new day with the dreary challenges of keeping warm, having enough to eat, and adjusting to adverse family situations.
Our Annual Dinner Dance affords a small number of our PromiseKids the rare opportunity of actually holding some good cards, even if it is only for a short 64 hours. The 50 PromiseKids who will entertain us on Monday evening will all return to their small villages many different kids than they were when they left their homes at 0-dark 30, two-days before. For the first time in their young lives they will know what it is like to be dealt a good hand of cards. We pray that what they will experience on this special trip will serve as an incentive for them to build a “good card” mentality for the rest of their lives.
We thank all of our 630 members and guests who will attend our 7th Annual Dinner Dance and make this adventure possible for these super kids. Nothing could be worse for our fledgling entertainers than to find empty seats in the Grand Ballroom of the Warsaw Hilton at show time. If you have a reserved seat for “Can you feel the love tonight,” be sure to be there and help these kids know what it’s like to hold good cards.
We (see PromiseKids below) will see you all Monday evening (Valentines Day) at 18:30 at the Warsaw Hilton Hotel. Business attire is the dress of the day.
"Love is the master key that opens the gates of happiness." Oliver Wendell Holmes.
We thank Christian Henkemeier and the InterContinental Hotel for once again hosting our Foundation’s CEO Breakfast meeting in the Hotel’s Grand Ballroom at 0830 on March 25th. This is one of the most popular events of our Foundation’s year and we would like to have all of our member CEOs in attendance. This is a special time to meet and greet other industry leaders in all fields of business. You can be sure that you will be served the best breakfast in town by the best hotel staff in town. Please respond with your reservation by return email. Look forward to seeing you on March 25th.
Year-in-review articles typically survey the most significant events of the previous 12 months, and our 2010 overview of corporate social responsibility (CSR) will not disappoint you.
I think the biggest CSR development of the year was the fact that CSR represents not just a trend, but a social movement. CSR is not a random collection of ad hoc discrete actions to revise corporate behavior, but rather a coherent aggregation of sustained, widespread efforts to reform the role of corporations, shifting from negative to positive impacts on society, the environment, and the economy.
During a year when philanthropic giving was down worldwide, our CEOs significantly increased our 2010 Foundation revenues. At the same time, our Foundation grew in numbers, and we will introduce Air France as a new member company at our 7th Annual Dinner Dance on February 14th. This all happened because our CEOs knew that it was a good thing to do because it is the right thing to do.
For those of us who are in the business of feeding 3,000 meals a day to poor hungry kids, the price of food is a major part of our lives. Raw food materials, whose prices were beating records last year are again rapidly becoming more expensive. Agricultural products world wide are trading particularly high. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) food-price index jumped 3.4 percent in January to a level of 231 points, beating the record set in December. I’m afraid to report that the high prices will continue through the coming months.
