IT WAS A BUSY SUMMER FOR THE FOUNDATION

GHELAMCO PROVIDING LOVE AS THE ONLY SANE AND SATISFACTORY ANSWER...

Erich Fromm would have been very proud of FCSR Member Company Ghelamco last week. Under the leadership of Ghelamco Poland’s CEO Jeroen van der Toolen, a team of 65 Ghelamco employees journeyed 8 hours in a double-decked bus to the PromiseLand in northwest Poland, and participated in a team building exercise that significantly changed one PromiseLand school, and the lives and spirits of an entire community.

In 28 short hours, the team renovated an English classroom, a History classroom, a day room, a nurse’s room, and the main entrance and hallway of the Nowe Worowo School. With no breaks, they worked all day and night determined to accomplish their task on time. And no one cared that a sudden summer storm knocked out all of the electricity in the village! The creative Ghelamco team simply imposed on the local fire department to provide generators so they could continue the job at hand throughout the night.

The school renovation included new lamps, furniture, desks and chairs, wallpaper, flooring, radiator covers, books, TV, etc. Every wall was sanded and painted. The planning of the project was done by the Ghelamco team, and the novice Ghelamco architects (office staff and junior executives), incorporated the school’s motto throughout the entire renovation: “Moja szkoła oknem na świat” (My school – the window to the world).

With work completed, it was time for the entire community to party the Ghelamco way. All the kids, teachers, parents, and local authorities, including the Wojt (Mayor), celebrated the occasion with a Ghelamco barbeque feast, chocolate fountains, cakes, sweets, pizza and Coca Cola (Thanks FCSR Member Coca Cola HBC). The Nowe Worowo PromiseKids loved playing in an inflatable castle, bouncing on huge trampolines, and participating in a star-studded football match against the Ghelamco employees. It was the biggest party ever held in this small Polish community called GMINA OSTROWICE.

Most of us have participated in some form of team building during our professional careers. You know how it works…You go off for a day or even a weekend with a group of fellow employees. You perform an assignment or two that will challenge your ability to work together. You all remember your favorite event. Roger Watchorn, former Cargill CEO, remembered his first team building exercise as a young man. His team built a boat that didn’t float. Well, he left the team building event a little fatter, a little closer to his contemporaries, and he left behind the product of his endeavors, a boat that didn’t float.

The Ghelamco Team didn’t leave a boat behind that wouldn’t float. No, they made a major contribution to a very needy school, and I venture to say that they left the team building exercise feeling much better about themselves and the company that employs them, Ghelamco.

Ghelamco Poland has been present in the Polish real estate market for 17 years. At the beginning of 2008 the company decided to enter the residential segment and created the Ghelamco Residential brand.

The company is a part of Ghelamco group, established in Belgium in 1985 and one of the largest commercial developers in Belgium, France, the Netherlands, Poland, Russia and Ukraine.

We thank you Ghelamco, and we thank you Ghelamco CEO Jeroen van der Toolen for this incredible contribution to Corporate Social Responsibility in Poland.

A SURPRISE AWARD FROM THE GMINA OSTROWICE VOJT

I was pleasantly surprised to be honored by the VOJT (Mayor) of GMINA OSTROWICE on behalf of the Foundation for Corporate Social Responsibility. A special resolution signed in March, 2011 designated me as an Honorary Trustee of GMINA OSTROWICE. It's the highest award one can receive from local authorities in the Republic of Poland. Natalie Marciniak, Operations Director of the Foundation, accepted the award not only on my behalf, but on behalf of our Foundation’s 90 member companies.

We are very pleased and honored to receive this Honorary Trusteeship.

INTERCONTINENTAL HOTEL WARSAW SENDS “BACK TO SCHOOL” SUPPLIES TO THE NOWE WOROWO PROMISEKID

When Christian Henkemeier, GM of the InterContinental Hotel Warsaw, heard about the Ghelamco renovation of the Nowe Worowo School, he figured the PromiseKids would be in need of school supplies equal to the remodeled school they would occupy. So Christian and his 5-star staff collected school supplies from hotel staff, friends, and hotel guests to get the school year off to a great start for the Nowe Worowo School PromiseKids.

What a wonderful thing to do Christian and IC staff! The kids were so incredibly delighted by this wonderful outpouring from our FCSR Member Hotel, InterContinental.

You guys are the best...
