FOOD FOR THOUGHT

WorldEconomic advancement in China has outstripped the pace of social, environmental and political change. However, a new report from the World Economic Forum and the Boston Consulting Group has found that Chinese firms are making rapid progress in their bid to become global corporate citizens. Among the areas where firms are making progress: environmental issues, social entrepreneurship and community development.

HOW DOES YOUR COMPANY STACK UP? Does your company’s CSR activities give you an advantage over your top competitors?

CSR AdvantageWe are moving beyond an era where CSR departments exist as a separate function in corporate organizations. The emerging trend is towards deep integration of CSR within organizations and true alignment of corporate responsibility with the business goals companies aim to achieve.

A tokenistic approach to sustainability and CSR is not good enough and is ultimately detrimental to the long term prospects of corporate organizations. Corporate history is littered with the examples of companies whose extreme short sightedness has been matched by an equally rapid down fall. Enron's now infamous "house of cards" and the morally bankrupt Goldman Sachs are prime examples.

"We can’t afford it right now. " We don't see a business case." "It's not one of our current strategic objectives."
"There aren't the resources to devote to such initiatives."

All of the above are common excuses for a failure to implement effective CSR and sustainability initiatives. A leading executive from a retail company told me off the record a key supplier's reluctance to engage on CSR meant they lost their status as a preferential supplier.

The evidence is now stacking up that a strong CSR program and long term business success go hand in hand. Let's look at the facts and figures:

  • The US forum for sustainable and responsible investment states CSR is worth at least $3 trillion to the US investment marketplace. Social and environmental risk in your portfolio is no longer a marginal consideration.
  • According to research by GlobeScan in January 2012, 74% of sustainability experts believe that environmental/social activism will increase significantly in the coming year. Strong NGO partnerships built on trust will be vital this year.
  • The Dodd Frank Act, according to The US Chamber of Commerce, will affect hundreds of thousands companies, at a cost of $9 billion-$16 billion. Early and effective response guarantees lower cost of compliance.

The IBM Institute for Business Value recently surveyed business leaders worldwide and found that more than two-thirds are focusing on corporate social responsibility activities to create new revenue streams. More than half of the surveyed business leaders believe that their companies' CSR activities are already giving them an advantage over their top competitors. Ethical Corporation May 02, 2012

SIXTY THREE BOXES OF CLOTHES/SHOES ON THE WAY TO THE PROMISELAND

It’s amazing what can be accomplished when responsible people have a cause in their hearts! We have been following the progress of the British School “mums” the past few weeks as they organized, collected and delivered clothing and shoes to our PromiseKids and their families. Well, the final count is in and the mums packed up 63 “big” Move One boxes last week for delivery to our PromiseKitchen.

The boxes contain clothing for babies, boys, girls, men and women. They contain shoes, scarves, hats, gloves and uniforms. The clothing was collected by the British School Parent Teachers Association in Warsaw with the able support and assistance of the British Embassy and Makro Cash & Carry. The mums sorted and packed the clothing and the British School students helped clean and match all of the shoes.

All of this was organized under the incredible leadership of Jenny Norden. She was supported by Els Anrijs and Maria Bonito just to name a few. And we are happy to say that the Bonito family once again has use of their family garage now that the collection has been moved out.

Jenny Norden wrote, “It has been a wonderfully rewarding experience to be part of this clothes collection.” The good news is that the mums asked if they could do the collection again next year. The answer is yes, yes, yes!

As if this wasn’t enough, the mums also presented Natalie with the 3,500 PLN they collected during their British School Quiz Night. The money will purchase 70 Polish/English dictionaries for 70 of our “Dreams Come True” interactive English students who will be graduating in June. (see below right)

We can’t thank you enough British School mums!
