"Vitality shows not only in the ability to persist, but the ability to start over."
-- F. Scott Fitzgerald

TIS THE SEASON:

In 2008, Harris Interactive conducted a study which found that “more than four in five people (83 percent) received unwanted gift items and almost half (46 percent) resold or re-gifted, that is, gave the unwanted gift to someone else as a gift.” This holiday season, the National Retailers Federation forecast that $5.8 billion will be spent on gifts. If you do the math, you’ll discover that a shocking $4.8 billion will be spent on unwanted gifts. What a terrible thing…

With all this money at stake, I wonder how much better it would be for all of us to give socially responsible gifts that people actually wanted. Perhaps we could inspire like-minded people to channel their collective purchasing power to support companies and organizations that share a vision of a better world.

"This is where the rubber meets the road...every time we buy things, we are voting in favor or against how companies operate. These companies are doing it the right way and are struggling to survive (when their competitors are making more money per unit)." Buy your Christmas gifts from socially responsible companies like those who are members of our Foundation for Corporate Social Responsibility.

Poland's food prices are expected to increase at a single-digit pace year on year in the 2012 Holiday season, Poland's Agriculture Minister Stanislaw Kalemba told PAP Polish news agency.

"Food prices for Christmas will surely be higher than last year; I think it will be a growth by several per cent, surely below 10%," Kalemba said. "Higher prices are primarily an effect of higher commodity prices, including food prices, on the global market.

If you prefer, please give money directly to our Foundation’s Hot-Meal Program via PayPal. I can assure you that our kids will appreciate your gifts and expressions of love and caring this Christmas season.

We know the holidays are a very busy time, but we hope you will remember to include the Foundation for Corporate Social Responsibility as part of your end-of-year giving plans.

THANK YOU FCSR MEMBERS FOR SUPPORTING OUR FOUNDATION’S DINNER DANCE

As our PromiseKids will happily tell you: 41 DAYS, 6 HOURS, 23 MINUTES remaining before our 10th Annual Dinner Dance on January 21, 2013.

With just 6 weeks left before the doors open on the biggest night of our Foundation year, this will be a good week for all of our members and guests to make sure they are prepared as well. Make sure you all have invited your 10 table guests. Remind them that this is not a formal affair; business attire will do just fine. The events of the evening will begin with cocktails at 1830, followed by the show of all shows, “Keeping our Promise – 10 Years,” presented by the PromiseKids Singers and Dancers. A 5-star gourmet dinner, as only Hilton can prepare, will delight our pallets, as will the dancing to the best band in the land, 36.6 until 23:00. Good night sweetheart, la la la.

And finally, this will be a good time to make your Dinner Dance payment of 2,400 PLN in order to have it count on your 2012 tax return. Payment reminders will be sent this week.

We want as many of our Foundation members to share in this special Foundation night as possible. Make sure your table reservations are firmed up with Natalie. She is assigning tables this week.

PRESSURE OF THE TAX MAN

Polish business people waste up to 286 hours a year filling in tax forms and other red-tape documents. The “Paying Taxes 2013” study conducted by the World Bank, also found that Poland was low on the list when it came to being tax-friendly. Out of 185 countries mentioned in the report, Poland came in 114th on the list in terms of being easy for businesses to organize their tax documentation.

The average company in the country pays 44.7 % of its profits to the tax office, generating 27 payments and devoting 267 hours on fulfilling their tax obligations.

Half of CFOs of big companies are expecting stagnation and worse results in 2013. Seventy percent of businesses are getting ready to cut costs, indicates an international study conducted by Deloitte among CFOs of large companies in Poland and Eastern Europe.

Just like a study done 6 months ago, 90 percent of those surveyed participants from Poland have described the current economic situation as uncertain.

FINANCIAL CRISIS IN HEALTH CARE SYSTEM

The ongoing crisis in the country’s public health system returned to the front pages this week following the announcement by the Warsaw Mother and Child Institute. The Institute said that they would only be performing operations in life threatening or emergency situations until the end of the year because they had run out of money.

Both economists and the government have warned the Polish public that the unemployment rate is set to get higher before the end of the year.
