We were very proud of our PromiseKid dancers this past week as they performed the Polish National Dance, Polonez, at the 50th anniversary of the John Paul II Primary School in Netno. We were also excited that our own staff members, Basia Kolasinska and Meg Ciucka were asked to participate in this very special anniversary celebration. The photo below shows Basia accepting a trophy for the 8 years our Foundation has supported the Netno School.
Netno is a small, lovely, village school of 84 students. (See photo below) Most of the students live in small nearby villages and get to Netno by school bus. We've been supporting these kids since 2005, and 40 of them take part in our "Dreams Come True" English program, and 20 more are students in Basia’s dance classes.
Among the 300 special guests at the anniversary celebration were the Mayor of Drawsko Pomorskie, Zbigniew Ptak, principals of nearby schools, the Bishop of the Zachodnipomorskie Diocese, and parents and friends of the Netno Village. (See below)
The Principal of Netno School, Grazyna Kapuscinska, related a story of her early memories of her time with the Foundation, and the first time she met Foundation Founder Bill Chasey:
“It was March 2005, and I had just become the principal of the school. Bill Chasey invited me to the meeting and told me about his plans to feed our students a hot-meal every school day. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing! Our kids really needed this help and still do today. We don’t know how to thank the Foundation enough,” says Grazyna.
There's nothing mysterious here. Poor people tell us they're poor because they don't have enough money—and who knows more about making money than businesspeople?
Let's take a look at the math: Seventy trillion dollars. This number is the estimated world GDP for 2012—clearly a very large number by anyone's standards. Additionally, the current World Bank estimate for 2013 is $75 trillion.
Most economic activity represented by those numbers takes place in the Global North – about $41 trillion, or nearly two-thirds of the 2012 total, as compared with the $12 trillion generated by the emerging economies of the South. And every year, according to the Financial Times, approximately $1 trillion more is invested in emerging economies.
Businesses, especially well-established companies, often can marshal all the necessary specialized expertise in design, financial management, marketing and other fields that are usually lacking or inadequate in either the public sector or the citizen sector.
Private businesses tend to be less susceptible to political pressure than governments, multilateral institutions and most citizen-sector organizations—especially in countries with weak governments.
Prosperous enterprises stimulate economic growth in the communities where they do business.
However, by creating new markets that enhance opportunities for livelihood and open access for poor people to products and services such as clean water, nutritious food, electricity, improved shelter, accessible health care and education at prices they consider affordable – and by providing them with jobs in the enterprises that furnish these goods and services – the poverty that holds back such a large segment of the world’s population can become a thing of the past.
It’s undeniable, then, that the private sector possesses all the financial and human resources needed to begin ending the scourge of poverty on Earth. The real challenge is to encourage entrepreneurs, investors and existing businesses to become engaged in what must seem a high-risk enterprise.
With these investments, will business undeniably play a role in raising the standard of living in the communities where they do business?

The results of this year’s Social Diagnosis report were released this week and they show an increasing number of Poles are feeling disillusioned with the state. The 12-person research team, led by Professor Janusz Czapinski, presented the 500-page document on Wednesday and it reveals a larger number of Poles are placing more emphasis on believing in themselves, their work and their health.
The past two years have seen a rising number grow dissatisfied with the state, with the majority concerned about future prospects. “Poles believe the state has mastered the art of playing them well and therefore there is a weaker relationship between the government and their personal lives,” said the report.
Those who claimed to trust others was at 11 percent (down from 12.2 percent in 2011) and people who are socially active fell 0.4 percent to 15.2 percent. Sixty three percent stated that health was most important to them (up 1.2 percent), work was second with 32.1 percent (up 1.4 percent) and 31.1 percent claimed it was money (up 1.2 percent).
The study also revealed that Poles are continuing to move away from the church. The number of people who attend religious services at least four times a month dropped 1.1 percent to 41.6 percent while those who pray regularly fell from 25.5 percent to 25.1 percent.
