DICTIONARIES FOR OUR INTERACTIVE ENGLISH PROGRAM

You may recall that we asked our readers last week to contribute dictionaries to the very best students in our Interactive English Language Program. I am delighted to report that we are receiving contributions on a daily basis and that our top students will be rewarded handsomely as the school year draws to a close.

We received our first contribution from Ron Coleman and his wife Ann from Springfield, Massachusetts. Ron was a classmate of mine at Springfield College 52 years ago, and he and Ann have followed the activities of our Foundation via our weekly newsletter over the past few years. What a wonderful thing you have done in helping support our poor PromiseKids located some 6,000 miles away in far-off Northwest Poland.

Just like clock work, our good Foundation friend, John Treuge sent his PayPal contribution to our Interactive English account. John is an Honorary Trustee of our FCSR, and has sponsored numerous students in our English Program over the years. We can’t thank you enough John for remembering our Foundation’s PromiseKids.

YOUNG POLES AIM HIGH IN BUSINESS

The average Polish start-up owner is 27 years old and is working on the third business idea he or she had, according to a report issued by business accelerator Business Link on the 25th anniversary of the fall of communism in Poland.

Though 25 years ago the Polish economy was based on state-owned assets, now some 67 percent of the country’s GDP is generated by micro, small and medium-sized enterprises, Business Link stressed. Young Poles are keen to establish their own companies, cherishing such values as independence and creativity, the report said.

The vast majority of Polish start- up owners (93 percent) are aware that university education does not prepare for being an entrepreneur, 68 percent say that the government does not support start-ups and 67 percent see high taxes as a barrier. Nevertheless, 89 percent believe that now is a good time to start one’s own business and 70 percent say that Poland is a good place to do so. The polled start-up owners are also ambitious. Some 67 percent want to be market leaders in the future and 52 percent want to promote Poland abroad.

UNEMPLOYMENT DOWN TO 12.5%

The registered unemployment rate in Poland fell to 12.5 percent in May, according to an estimate released by the Ministry of Labor and Social Policy on Thursday. In April the figure was 13 percent. The decline mostly results from economic growth, which guarantees an increase in the number of jobs.
