"Don't go through life, grow through life."
-- Eric Butterworth
On Wednesday, June 10th, students, teachers, school directors and families from the PromiseLand gathered together for a “Memorial Day” in Bill Chasey’s (Founder and President of the Foundation) honor at the Brzezno School in Swidwin, where the Foundation began thirteen years ago.
One caring American guy and one equally caring and very determined Brzezno School Headmaster, Jola Zbieg, met and quickly bonded. She desperately wanted to help her students, kids of wonderful, but poor families who just needed some help. Jola was never one to mince words and was initially very wary of Bill’s intentions. That very quickly dissolved as they got to know each other over Jola’s cakes and tea, but more importantly as the Foundation went to work, keeping its promises.
Although Bill never learned to speak Polish fluently and Jola never learned to speak English, one would not have known it. They were united in purpose and became the best of friends and colleagues over the years. Jola has since retired, but it was wonderful to see her back at Brzezno on this very special day.
This was not the first celebration of Bill’s life in the PromiseLand. When the schools learned about Bill’s passing, there were assemblies in each Foundation school where students and teachers shared their memories of Bill and gave honor through a minute of silence.
However, at this service all the directors of the various schools supported by the Foundation in the past and present, and representative students from each school attended. The PromiseKids who participated were the older students who remembered Bill when he lived in Poland and visited with them. The emotions were high and Meg reported that no one could stop the well of tears. Nevertheless, the students did a great job of performing and it was heartwarming to hear the testimonies of students and teachers alike.
The following people were in attendance:

The following is Meg’s report on the day’s activities:
Everyone came together to remember our dear Bill. There were kids there who participated in many FCSR programs and events (Dinner Dance, InterContinental Scholarship Program, etc.) as well as the teachers and headmasters who have worked closely with the Foundation over the years and have such fond memories of Bill.
Marzena, the host, welcomed all the guests, especially Natalie, Basia and me. One of our students read Bill's biography and another read the history of FCSR. After that Natalia Marciniak, the General Manager of FCSR, thanked everyone for coming. She also announced that Virginia Chasey, Bill’s wife, is now FCSR President.
Then Marzena walked around the room, with a microphone, asking the guests to share their memories and stories about Bill. One of the FCSR band kids, Patrycja Potyralska read a short note in the name of the band that they posted on Facebook in Bill’s memory.
We were all laughing and crying. Jola told the story about how one day Bill invited her school to visit the President of Poland (Kwasniewski) in Warsaw. It seemed ridiculous! They didn’t believe it possible! But Bill performed his magic and our own Patrycja even sang for the President at the Presidential Palace. That was Bill… It was funny. During this nice time of recollection, photos of Bill were displayed on the screen.
Then the dance group came out and danced beautifully to one of Bill's favorite songs "You Raise Me Up" sung by 4 girls: Marcysia Kosińska - solo singer, Małgorzata Gibert - Reagan girl, Basia Kolasińska - FCSR Art and Music Director and Małgorzata Ciućka - FCSR Regional Director. Basia designed the choreography and costumes.
At the end, I read a letter from Virginia thanking everyone and promising the continued commitment of the Foundation to the PromiseLand.
All in all it was a beautiful tribute to Bill, the Foundation and all that our members have done for the children, families and schools in this region. It is with deep gratitude and appreciation that we thank everyone who came.
