"A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in. "
-- Greek proverb

* * * * *

As this school year comes to a close, we hope FCSR has planted a lot of trees whose shade we may never see, but who will go on to “spread the shade” and make life better for this generation and the next. Let’s look at the trees we’ve planted in the last few weeks…

Sincerely,
Virginia Chasey,
FCSR President

LITTLE CHEF WINNERS ANNOUNCED!

The tension couldn’t have been higher as the twelve “Little Chef” finalists took center stage for the day they had waited and prepared for, for so long: the cook-off at the Bierzwnica School.

Remember, these kids have been participating in our cooking workshops, sponsored by AmRest Sp. z o.o. all school year. This was their chance to show off what they had learned about preparing meals. To add to the stress, the chefs did not know beforehand what they were going to be asked to prepare for the judges.

Stage One: Prepare a “tortilla twister” (burrito). From the 12 entries, the judges selected 6 finalists based on taste, preparation and appearance.

Stage Two: Prepare a layered dessert. During this stage, the 6 remaining chefs were so focused and the audience so intense, all one could hear was the sound of the blenders – no talking, no smiling! They just went to work.

Finally, the moment of decision arrived and the three winners were announced:

1. Maciej Majchrzak - Nowe Worowo

2. Jakub Starosta - Bierzwnica

3. Marika Kaczmarska - Nowe Worowo

Needless to say, the winners couldn’t stop beaming and the boys were especially delighted to beat the girls this year Congratulations to all the kids who participated in the competition. You’re all “the best”!

Note: The “Little Chef” remains the #1 FCSR program in our schools!

We also want to give a hearty thank you to the following jurors: Vice wojt Joanna Anglisz-Myszka, Dietitian Karolina Fujarska, her assistant Katarzyna Wojtaś and Dorota Adamiak, Manager of the Education Department in the Świdwin rural commune. Also a shout out to member companies AmRest and Fanex for their products and support.

DREAMS COME TRUE FOR TOP STUDENTS IN FCSR ENGLISH PROGRAM

From November to June, fifty-five 5th and 6th graders from our PromiseLand elementary schools, participated in the FCSR “Dreams Come True” English language e-learning program. This is an after school program, so students have to be personally committed and motivated in order to succeed. There were 2 groups: "Gilbert 1" for 5th graders and "Gilbert 2" for 6th graders. Each program consists of 8 units and 40 online classes of vocabulary and grammar. The top students are those who not only achieve 100%, but use the least number of “hints”( student aides) to reach their goal.

The following students achieved 100% and used the least number of hints. Each winner received a Polish/English Dictionary from the Foundation.

1. Podstawska, Julia - Nowe Worowo

2. Kiejno, Tomasz - Nowe Worowo

3. Ogrodowski, Jakub - Nielep

Gilbert 2

1. Barański, Jakub - Bierzwnica

2. Kiejno, Katarzyna - Nowe Worowo

3. Syska, Dominika - Mielenko Drawskie

Planting a tree: At the beginning of this newsletter we talked about planting “trees” to “spread the shade”. The students in our English program are a good example of that proverb. Let’s take Jakub Barański, the top student of Gilbert 2.

Jakub is from the small village of Cieszeniewo and is in the 6th grade at the Bierzwnica School. He was so happy to win first place.

What was his motivation? Last year Jakub participated in "Gilbert 1" and came in 3rd place. His reward was a pass to “Gilbert 2”. But, he wasn't satisfied. He told Meg, FCSR Operations Director, that this year he would work harder. His goal: to get 100%, without any hints. He did work very hard and he almost had a perfect score. He only used hints 4 times! By contrast, the 2nd place winner had 22.

Jakub is happy that he can participate in our online English course and also take part in our Foundation competition. Even though he lives in a village, thanks to Internet access at school and the Foundation, he can be part of the program. But, his story doesn’t end there. He also earned the highest grade in his regular English class with a 6 for his final 2017 school year certificate! Now there is a young man who will be “spreading the shade” for many years to come!

Congratulations to all the students who participated in our “Dreams Come True” program and a special thanks to Meg Ciucka, FCSR Operations Director for managing the program throughout the year!
