HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Dear Friends and Supporters,

Yes indeed, everyone at the Foundation, our PromiseKids, their families, teachers and Directors all wish every one of you a very happy, healthy, and blessed New Year!

Thank you especially for a wonderful 2018. Because of your support, we have been able to bring so much joy and hope to our kids, through the programs you have supported, from art, singing and dancing, to nutrition and healthy living activities, to our new incentive, robotics!

So many of these things we take for granted in our own lives and perhaps for our own children. But, for our PromiseKids, we are still talking about the „forgotten ones” who live in tiny villages, where there are no industries and families still try to eke out a living in forests, fishing and small farms. You give them hope that there are opportunities and a future out there. And sometimes it’s not just about the future. Sometimes, it’s just about being happy and finding joy in life at the moment…

Thank you for enriching the lives of our kids.

Blessings,

Virginia Chasey, BA, MLS

President, FCSR

MEMORIES FOR A LIFE TIME

Anticipation and excitement filled the air at the Lekowo and Nowe Worowo schools on Monday, December 10th and Tuesday, December 11th. The students could hardly wait for the gym doors to open for the Christmas Party! And what a celebration and coming together it was!

The British School in Warsaw and its Parent and Teacher Association organized this 8th edition of the “Christmas Giving Tree” for 283 of our PromiseKids: 125 from Lekowo and 138 from Nowe Worowo.  However, this year was very special. Twelve British School students, ages 12-15, 2 teachers and 2 parents arrived at the schools, coming all the way from Warsaw, to personally give away the presents and meet with our students. Please note that most of our students have never met anyone outside their villages, so, as FCSR Founder, Dr. Bill Chasey would have said: “Now that’s a WOW!!”

Not only did our guests get to play Santa Claus, they participated with great eagerness in the learning and lives of the PromiseKids for two days. They attended regular classes where our students had a chance to practice their English skills and make new friendships. For lunch, the British students enjoyed some traditional Polish dishes such as homemade pierogi. After lunch, our FCSR staff took them on a tour of the Medieval Knights Castle in Swidwin. Later in the day, our guests were invited by 15 very talented art students to take part in Christmas workshops at the Lekowo School, where they enjoyed creating and making wonderful holiday decorations together.

The next day was spent at the Primary School of Nowe Worowo. The students’ eyes were as big as saucers to see these “big kids” from Warsaw spend the day with them! The ice was soon broken however, as the gifts were distributed and everyone sang familiar Christmas songs together, especially “All I Want for Christmas is You” and “Last Christmas” …

There were some unforgettable moments. While our guests were giving out the presents, it suddenly started to snow. We found out that among our visitors there was one girl who hadn’t seen snow for 7 years! Before we knew it, she was outside twirling in in the snow. Of course everyone had to join in. Fun for all!

Not only was this a memorable time for our PromiseKids, but we were delighted to hear these comments from a few of our British guests:

Julia, 12. I decided to come on this trip to see how magical it is to see the joy in the kids eyes and to meet so many amazing people.

Esma, 12.  I joined the trip because I really like to see the happiness on children’s’ faces and I like that the children still believe in Santa Claus and his helpers. I hope they will remember us. I know I will never forget this experience.

Magdi 13, I came here because I know that not everyone is so lucky as we are and I wanted to share. I came to see the happiness on their faces when they opened the gifts they’ve waited for, for so long.

Thank you British School of Warsaw for truly bringing the love and joy of Christmas to the PromiseLand and our PromiseKids!

THE RESULTS ARE IN!

Over the last few years, Basia Kolasinska, FCSR Arts Director, has conducted a Christmas Card Competition among our schools. It has since become one of the most favorite events of the year! In the first week of December, over 375 of the most genuine and stunning cards arrived at our office.

Every possible material went into the making of these cards from beautiful fabrics, to toothpicks, sequins, paper mache and cotton. It was extremely difficult to pick the most beautiful or creative card, but somehow Basia and Meg did it. There were 5 categories, ages 5 – 18, from 10 schools. Thirty-five prizes and diplomas were awarded. The top cards were mailed out to FCSR friends and supporters. We hope you enjoyed yours! Funds for the prizes came from your1% personal income tax for 2017. Thank You!

TIME TO THINK TAXES AND 1% CHARITY GIVING

Poland has a wonderful tradition of giving to charities and the Polish government has made it even easier for its citizens to give to the charity of their choice. 1% of their taxes can be designated to registered charities. FCSR is one such organization.

Soon, we will be sending out brochures to you and/or your company outlining our programs and how you and your employees can help us continue our work in what we like to call, “The PromiseLand”.

Thanks to your 1% personal income tax from 2017, we were able to organize and sponsor the following events/items in 2018:

  • Transportation costs and tickets to historic and cultural sites in Warsaw for twenty of our students to participate in the InterContinental Hotel Warsaw Student Scholars Program last summer.

  • Organized and sponsored a Weekend Robotics Workshop for twenty teachers to learn coding with robots.

  • Bought 5 sets of smart robots for 5 schools.

  • Prizes for WeCanDance winners.

  • Awards for Christmas Card contest.

  • Co-organized and sponsored “The Day of Teddy” at the Slawoborze Special Needs School.

  • Christmas gifts and party for the smallest children at the Slawoborze Special Needs School
We hope you will remember the FCSR PromiseKids in your giving again this year. Thank you in advance…For more information, please contact Meg Ciucka, FCSR Operations Director in Swidwin or Marta Was, FCSR Executive Director in Warsaw. For contact information, see below.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

While we like to approach the New Year with great enthusiasm and optimism, we also realize there are many challenges ahead. It’s a good time to remind ourselves that: „..with God, nothing is impossible. He has more ropes and ladders and tunnels out of pits than you can conceive. Wait. Pray without ceasing. Hope.” –  John Piper

Happy New Year!
