September 10, 2018 Vol. 16 No. 1

Dear Friends and Supporters,

It is interesting how we all have our own ways of starting a “new year” according to our culture, business cycle, calendar, etc. Here at the Foundation, our new year begins the first day of the school year for our kids in Poland. As a professional educator, I can relate to that. There is always something exciting about starting the school year: new classes, friends, teachers, a new school…anticipating “things that never were.” Here at FCSR, we want our kids to experience that excitement every day of this school year.

It is our goal at the Foundation to give hope and opportunities to our “PromiseKids” that go beyond their villages and the cycle of poverty that surrounds them. Thanks to you and your belief in our mission, we are continuing our sixteenth year of work in the Zachodnie Podmarskie region of Poland, one of the poorest areas of the country.

Some of you might ask: Really, after 16 years aren’t things better in that area? Of course they are “better”, but “better” is relative. As in most countries, populations living close to urban centers fare well, but those in rural areas are the “forgotten.” That’s why we are still here and will stay here until our “PromiseKids” don’t need us anymore!

Read on and find out what we are doing together to make that happen…

Blessings and Thanks,

Virginia Chasey

InterContinental Scholars Travel to Warsaw

From August 3-6, the top 9 Scholars from our PromiseLand schools and our top „little chef”, Weronika from the Nielep Primary School, were guests of the InterContinental Hotel in Warsaw. Each school selected its best student based on the highest average grade score and citizenship. Most of the students had never traveled outside their villages before, let alone stay in a 5star hotel, so traveling to Warsaw to tour its historical and cultural sites and staying at the InterContinental Hotel was definitely a dream come true.

This was the 11th year in a row that the InterContinental Hotel of Warsaw hosted the InterContinental Scholars Program for our PromiseKids. We’d like to express our deep gratitude to ICH General Manager, Marten Schoenrock, and his unforgettable, devoted staff, who treated our kids as kings and queens throughout their stay.

We’d also like to thank KFC Warsaw Restaurant „Gruba Kaśka” at Plac Bankowy, for inviting our kids for a delicious lunch while touring the Old Town.

The pictures below tell the whole story of the fun and excitement the kids experienced on this trip.

Let the 2018-2019 School Year Begin!

As always the hallways were filled with squeals and laughter as our PromiseKids greeted each other and started the new school year on Monday, September 3.

FCSR Operations Director, Meg Ciucka and FCSR Arts Director, Basia Kolasinska were on hand during the week to greet new and old students, parents, teachers and Directors. Everyone was eager to hear about FCSR’s plans for this year’s after-school program. Here is our Fall agenda:

  • The 4th edition of the ever popular Little Chef cooking workshops sponsored by AmRest Sp. z o.o.

  • Dance classes: „Stage Passion” in the Brzeżno Primary School with kids age 8-14 and the highly competitive “WeCanDance” program in 9 schools (150 kids), with the grand finale at Lekowo Primary School.

  • Christmas Card Competition (last year we received over 300 cards!)

NEW THIS YEAR! “Robotics at Village Schools”

Last year we ran a pilot Robotics program in 2 of our schools. The program was met with tremendous enthusiasm and interest. Thanks to your support through the 1% tax donations, we plan to buy robots for those schools and initiate the program after school this fall.

Lear more by watching our video: Video=Robotics

We still need more financial support to buy additional robots and expand the program to more students and schools. Please read the program description on our website. We invite you and/or your company to underwrite more robots for this program. It’s a wonderful way to start to prepare our PromiseKids for engineering, programming/coding and computer technology careers in the future.

Please know that the Directors of the schools, teachers, parents and students always share with us how much they appreciate the Foundation’s long-term cooperation with them.

None of the programs would be possible without the support of you, our members and friends of the Foundation. A special thanks to Exxon Mobil Sp. z o.o. for donating its annual fee for our Fall programs. Thank you to our largest contributor, AmRest Sp. z o.o. for sponsoring one of the most popular programs we offer, “The Little Chef” cooking classes.  We appreciate all those anonymous donators who gave FCSR 1% of their personal income for the 2017 tax year! There are so many more who deserve recognition and we will do so throughout the year. We couldn’t do it without you!
